Sis boom wha . . . ?

She doesn't know what the cheer is, either.

I found the above picture of a Notre Dame cheerleader while browsing through SI.com's photo galleries today. Yeah, I was looking at pictures of cheerleaders. Sue me. But the thing that really intrigued me about this picture -- taken, I believe, during Notre Dame's ass-stomping of Tennessee a few weeks ago -- was not the comely cheerleader but the sign she's holding. I'm 99 percent sure the word on that sign is "ABUSE," and call me crazy, that seems like an odd word to put in a cheer, even at a hotly contested football game. What larger cheer or phrase were they trying to exhort the crowd to shout, I wonder?

a) ABUSE THE VOLS!
b) TENNESSEE'S COLORS ARE FASHION ABUSE!
c) LET US DISABUSE YOU OF THE NOTION YOU ARE STILL A NATIONAL FOOTBALL POWER!
d) THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR SPOUSAL ABUSE!
e) TWO BITS! FOUR BITS! SIX BITS! A DOLLAR! ALL WHO ARE OUTRAGED BY THE CHILD-ABUSE SCANDAL THAT CONTINUES TO BELEAGUER THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, STAND UP AND HOLLER!

Any of those sound good? Or no? If you've got any suggestions, put 'em in the comments. Especially if you're a Notre Dame fan who was at the game and can reveal what they were actually saying.

Actually, this sign was one of two made for the game against the Orangemen. The other says, "SYR". Just a small typo or a commentary on the treatment 10 opponents showed the Orangemen this season.

Or

This sign was the last of seven made for the Navy game and, in kicking a deadhorse fashion, was protesting the 1991 Tailhook Convention. The other signs said "Groping" "Chicks" "In A" "Gauntlet" "Is" "Sexual" ______.

Actually, it's not "abuse." The entire cheer was "Tennessee / Being / Ranked / Number 3 / Was Just / A Ruse."

I can understand your error.
