Fool me once, shame on you; fool me, uh, thirty-seven times . . .

See that big (well, moderately large) red dot over Birmingham? Yup, that's pretty much all I needed to see to know that this map is complete bullshit.

But maybe it's just me. Does the, uh, dot over your particular city jibe with your individual dating experience, which with any luck isn't as barren or soul-crushing as mine's been over the past year?

Doug,

if you really want to solve your singleness problems, leave the US.

Looking at that map makes it clear that there's way too men out there even in the US. The answer is simple; go to Europe/Asia and find your self a nice girl who wants to date a foreigner e.g. you and go for her.

Living overseas has been hugely successful for my social and romantic life and I can't recommend it more.

Orlando appears to have more single men than women, but since I moved here, I’ve dated:

1. A complete lunatic
2. A potentially gay Disney employee
3. A Washington General
4. A married man (almost -- and accidentally)

So there’s no accounting for quality. (I expect that my recent policy of Not Dating would skew the numbers somewhat, as well.)

As for you? It’s possible that you’re just an objectionable person.

More single men in LA? Sure. But they're all sleeping WITH EACH OTHER. Not that there's anything wrong with that, since I have more gay male friends than straight male AND female friends put together, but it does put a damper on...well, y'know.

Lessee...leave the country....ignore all the signs and date lunatics anyway....have all gay friends....good thing this isn't designed as a relationship blog. I am old and have been married continuously to one person for 36+ years so what do I know? But my daughter moved to NYC (loaded with women per the chart) and within a few months was steadily dating (over a year now) a really nice, athletic, employed straight male. It can happen; quit making it such a goal that acts of desperation become the norm rather than the exception, and it will happen. Even for Doug.

Holly's pain is my gain: up here a whole big chunk of my competition are only interested in each other. Little known secret about SF: it's a pretty great place for a single straight guy.

After a few years of fun in the dating pool, I got me a beautiful, smart and wonderful PAC10 girl. I'm all about that West Coast bias...

That map looks right on the money to me, Doug. The pissy think about both Atlanta AND NYC is that not only are there more women than men, all the women take extraordinarily good care of themselves. So you get ready to go out at the beginning of the night, and think you look alright, and then walk into your local bar and there are tons of drop-dead gorgeous girls, at which point you head to the bodega for brown-bag pints of rye and Ben&Jerry's, and huddle up in front of The Notebook and pretend there are still tons of Noahs out there waiting...

Why does this map depress me so? Oh, yeah...because I'm married (Not that there's anything wrong with that).

Be careful for what you wish for.

From the places I have lived it looks about right

Doug - Having spent some time visiting Bham. It could be that your particular demographic isn't the group that makes the dot so red.

Here's the thing: see that blue dot over Columbus? Yeh, when I lived there I DID find an extraordinary number of single guys. Passing through Basic. So really what you have here is a situation where the odds may be good but the goods may be odd. I don't know if sheer volume is a good statistic to look at in this case.

Hey-

At least you have a dot. I live in Saint Simons. We don't have dots.

We do have a beach and that one, glorious weekend each year.

As for trying to find a date...complete disaster. Everyone knows everyone else.

Ah Atlanta, where many women may look good...but sadly many of them (the ones that hit the bars anyway) act like they really wish they could be on The Hills or The Real World.

So, no accounting for quality (and considering certain sections of Atlanta, orientation) means it looks like a weird political map with many reds/blues reversed (ladies seem to dig urban areas).

Greenville isn't represented here, but if it makes you feel any better, my luck hasn't been any better. Well maybe a tad better in that I haven't even tried, thereby avoiding catastrophe or rejection. Anyway, don't give up. Good things come to those who wait. I hope.

Well, I don't live in a city; and my part of Maine has no dots.

Either I'll have to move south, or move to Canada. *nods*

wow...that makes this dfw dweller happy to be in a relationship...with a female.
