Friday Random Ten, Merry Fitzmas Edition.

Well, Cheney's chief of staff Lewis "Scooter" Libby got indicted on perjury and obstruction-of-justice charges today. Yeah, yeah, he's innocent until proven guilty, but let's just say the nickname "Scooter" is not going to inspire a lot of deference or intimidation in the prison shower. I'll save the full-fledged four-alarm raging kegger for if/when Karl Rove gets nailed for something, but at the very least this latest news is worth a celebratory G&T or something. I will not, however, be participating in the drinking game whereby I do a shot every time a Republican tries to claim that what Scooter is accused of doing is tooootally different from what Clinton was accused of doing, because a) I'd like to be sober enough to have some tolerance left over for the game tomorrow, and b) I'm not sure I have that much alcohol in my house.

By the way, has anyone seen Ann Coulter lately? God, she looks terrible, by which I mean more terrible than usual, but more than that, she's just got this defeated tone in her voice. Like between the dismal approval ratings, the rampant spending, the Harriet Miers hoo-ha and now the Libby indictments, she's pulled back the curtain and discovered that the Great and Powerful Oz is just some room-temperature-IQ Texan with nice suits and a big-ass microphone. Oh, how the skanky have fallen.

I'm going to cut the schadenfreude now before God decides to take some karmic vengence on yet another Georgia quarterback, and just roll right into the Ten:

1. R.E.M., "Radio Free Europe" (live)
2. J. Geils Band, "Centerfold"
3. Pet Shop Boys, "Flamboyant" (Scissor Sisters mix)
4. Patton Oswalt, "My Christmas Memory"
5. David Holmes, "Pickpockets"
6. Elvis Presley, "Suspicious Minds"
7. Dave Attell, "Parrot"
8. DJ Shadow, "Midnight in a Perfect World"
9. Air, "New Star in the Sky"
10. Oasis, "Wonderwall"

Now it's off to say a Rosary for Joe T . . .

Haven't seen her lately; but...bwah! :D

You are in Birmingham as I recall.

Admit it, there isn't that much alcohol in your town.

The blogosphere is having a hategasm of "Clinton did worse" and "That's not really a crime."

If you want to cut down on your drinking you should limit yourself to having a shot whenever a neocon talking head uses the phrase "A prosecutor can indict a ham sandwich."

If Scooter is guilty, he did exactly what Clinton did, but he has already paid a higher price than Clinton. He has lost his job and will be prosecuted (although you could argue that Clinton's impeachment was a prosecution of sorts, however the end result would not have been jail time). Not making any equivalance argument here. If Scooter lied and obstructed, send him to prison.

What always amazes me about people in general and politicians in particular, they think they are smarter than everyone else and that they can get away lying in cases like this. They almost always get caught. In my mind, the only reason to lie would have been if they were actually guilty of the charge being investigated. If he was, I wish he'd been charged with that. If he wasn't, he should have told the truth and taken the political lumps.

Of course, the difference between Clinton and Scooter is that Scooter is actually being investigated for an actual crime, whereas Clinton was the subject of GOP fishing expedition.
Tony.

... and Clinton took the bait and lied under oath. How is that more noble?

Lying under oath is lying under oath. One is not more noble than the other. However, the crime about which one lies, can be less serious. An extramarital blow job is certainly a less significant crime than outing an undercover CIA operative.

If you asked my wife, she would probably disagree.

So, is your wife involved in prosecuting people for crimes they commit? Just curious, because I think if she were, the prisons would be over-run with people who got extra-marital blow jobs while people who commit treason and risk national security - not to mention the life of a person who serves the country - for their own personal political gain would be on the street.

So how does that work exactly? If he had given the exact location of a soldier in Iraq at a moment for the insurgants to kill/kidnap, would that not be as bad as an extra-marital blow job either? I mean the result is the same - A service member's life was put in jeopardy because of the actions of this guy. Can the same be said of Monica's actions? Uh, no. It's less offensive whether your wife thinks so or not.

1. You can't recognize a joke when you see it.

2. The blow job wasn't the crime, the lying under oath was the crime. No one's life has been put in danger whether Scooter outed Valerie Plame or not. If he lied under oath he should go to jail. If outing Val was a crime, he should go to jail for that too. Don't try to make Clinton look like some kind of hero here. Bottom line we don't know for sure yet whether Scooter committed a crime. We do know for sure that Clinton did commit the same crime that Scooter is now charged with.

1. hard to recognize a joke when it isn't funny.

2. never said the blow job was the crime. agreed perjury is perjury. Outing an undercover operative doesn't endanger that operative's life? How so? Bet my wife posing as an undercover hooker would have a different opinion... see, that's funny.
